CS2351: Data Structures

Prerequisites

• C or C++ programming language
• A heart eager to learn how to be an excellent programmer (Remember that "Algorithms + Data Structures = Programs"!)

Text/Reference Books

• Text book: "Fundamentals of Data Structures in C" by Ellis Horowitz, Sartaj Sahni, and Susan Anderson-freed, Computer Science Press, New York (Slides of the text book)

  We will cover Chapters 1-7 and selected topics of Chapter 8 of the text book. This course will proceed along the following subjects :

  1. Introduction to Algorithms
  2. Array and Structures
  3. Stacks and Queues
  4. Lists
  5. Trees
  6. Sets
  7. Graphs
  8. Hashing
  9. Sorting

• Reference books (No need to buy)
  • "Fundamentals of Data Structures in C++" by Horowitz, Sahni, Mehta
  • "Data Structures with C++ Using STL" by Ford and Topp

Grading Policy

• Quizzes: 10%
• Midterm1: 20%, Chap 1-3, March 31 (Tue), 7:00~9:00 PM
• Midterm2: 25%, Chap 4-5, May 7 (Thu), 7:00~0:00 PM
• Final: 25%, Chap 6-?, June 15 (Mon), 10:10~12:00 AM
• Programming assignments: 20%. (One final project will be assigned near the end of semester. Failure to submit the final project will result in failure of this course no matter what grades you accumulate by quizzes, midterms, and final.)

• Passing rate of this class last year: 70/96 = 73%
• Lectures are in Mandarin and English, depending on the attendees.
• You are required to be honest. No cheating in either quiz or examination. A caught cheating act will be given zero grade.
• You are required to be responsible. No late submissions of programming assignments.
